DuraFlow 2 AngioDynamics Releases New DuraFlow 2 Chronic Hemodialysis CatheterAngioDynamics launched in the U.S. its new DuraFlow 2 chronic hemodialysis catheter that allows for higher blood flow over a longer period of time with less recirculation.

Additionally, the soon to be released DuraFlow 2 VascPak (VP) kit has been redesigned to make them smaller for easier handling and storage.

Along with the DuraMax® chronic hemodialysis catheter, AngioDynamics offers the only 48 cm chronic dialysis catheters on the market, allowing for femoral catheter placements in patients of varying sizes. The DuraFlow 2 catheter continues to provide optimal ease of insertion and sustained high flow rates. A new tough, rigid thermoplastic polyurethane luer increases durability, allowing for more secure fastening to dialysis machines.

The new streamlined VP kit, set for launch in the fiscal 2012 third quarter, is designed to meet the needs of many outpatient vascular access centers. Additionally, tray sizes for both the VP and basic kits have been reduced by approximately 30 percent, providing an ideal fit with popular automated medical supply stations and easier handling and storage.

Boston Sci's TruePath CTO Crosses Challenging Peripheral Arterial Blockages

Boston Scientific has launched its TruePath CTO Device in the U.S. with a rollout in Europe scheduled for later in the year. TruePath is designed for penetrating through chronic total occlusions that block peripheral arteries, avoiding the need for the patient to undergo a bypass.

The device features a diamond coated tip that can spin at 13,000 rpm to drill right through uncooperative plaque buildups.

Nanotech Coating Could Stop Bleeding within Seconds

A nanoscale biological coating could prevent battlefield deaths by halting bleeding nearly instantaneously. Developed by engineers at MIT with the assistance of Ferrosan Medical Devices A/S (Soeborg, Denmark), the coating includes thrombin, a protein involved in blood clotting that has been used clinically for decades for topical hemostasis and wound management. The coating also contains tannic acid, a molecule found in tea.

In a recent study, the researchers developed a biological coating consisting of two alternating layers sprayed onto a material, such as a sponge. The coating forms a film containing a high level of functional thrombin. According to the researchers, sponges coated with the material can be stored stably and carried by soldiers or medical personnel to treat the wounded. Similar sponges could also prove useful in civilian hospitals.

Bolton Medical Completes Patient Enrollment in EVAR Trial

Aneurysms of the abdominal aorta have traditionally required an open approach, a high-risk and bloody surgery with a long recovery time. In recent years this practice has been supplanted in certain patient populations by endovascular  aortic repair (EVAR).  In this approach, a graft is introduced into the aorta through the femoral artery, requiring a shorter hospital stay and less blood loss.  One company actively involved in this field is Bolton Medical, based out of Florida and Barcelona.  We last reported on their Treovance Abominal Stent-Graft in May 2011, when the ADVANCE trial of this device first started (link).  Now, patient enrollment has been completed, and the results are reported to be encouraging, although the final data isn’t available yet.
