Nuance Cloud Medical Speech Recognition to Power Mobile Devices, Watson Supercomputer

hgsdrg Nuance Cloud Medical Speech Recognition to Power Mobile Devices, Watson Supercomputer
Nuance Communications out of Burlington, Massachusetts is now offering its cloud-based clinical speech recognition technology to developers for integration into their applications. Because processing is done externally of the device where speech is captured, powerful voice recognition can be introduced to relatively slow computing devices like tablets and smartphones. Additionally, IBM is partnering with Nuance to couple its victorious Watson supercomputer with medical speech recognition to provide clinical decision making at the point of care.

The Nuance Healthcare Development Platform supports multiple devices and operating systems. By providing all of the CPU intensive speech and language processing in the cloud, this new platform enables Healthcare ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) and internal development teams at provider and payer organizations to seamlessly embed Nuance’s SpeechAnywhere capabilities and CLU functionality as part of browser-based applications, mobile applications and thin-client desktop solutions. The flexible environment of
this new platform as a service expands the delivery of Nuance’s speech and CLU technologies to empower healthcare organizations, physicians, interdisciplinary care teams and patients to achieve better patient
documentation, better process and better care.

Besides the amazing ability to power through Daily Doubles and answer random trivia in the form of a question, IBM researchers believe that Watson could revolutionize the healthcare industry. From diagnostics to informatics, Watson could quickly search through medical records, clinical documents, and research information for precise answers that would benefit both doctors and patients.

Personal Health Card from LifeNexus: Patient Records With Payment Card Functionality

Don’t be dismayed by the incorrect depiction of the Rod of Asclepius on yet another medical logo. Putting the wings aside, the technology is certainly interesting. LifeNexus, Inc. from Broomfield, Colorado, has announced today a launch of an electronic health card that combines an individual’s health record and a payment card option. The company has worked for years with MasterCard, Visa, VeriFone, Emdeon, and others, to deliver this technology to the market. According to the company’s statement, the LifeNexus Personal Health Card is powered by a proprietary iChip technology (Individually Controlled Health Information Platform™), that utilizes "mobile server" technology “embedded on a chip card which is both encrypted and password-protected, providing a highly secure environment to store comprehensive and potentially lifesaving health information for individuals and their family members.” Before a patient or provider can use the card, the LifeNexus requires a download of desktop software.

Mobile MIM App First to Receive FDA Clearance for Viewing Radiological Images

MIM Software, Inc. out of Cleveland, Ohio, has announced that its multi-modality imaging software, Mobile MIM, has received 510(k) clearance from the FDA, showing it to be safe and effective for “viewing images and making medical diagnoses based on computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and nuclear medicine technology, such as positron emission tomography (PET). It is not intended to replace full workstations and is indicated for use only when there is no access to a workstation.”
For the app’s review, the FDA performed various tests that measured luminance, image quality (resolution), and noise. These tests were performed under various lighting conditions, which often create significant, but important differences in images.
