'Antivirus' for Syringe Disposal

Winners of this year's INDEX design awards have been announced. Lucky for us, one of the five chosen winners is Han Pham from Denmark, and his concept for a simple syringe disposal system dubbed 'Antivirus'. The idea is to use a standard aluminum can as the receptacle on top of which a one way lid is attached, all a quick and cheap solution that will help with vaccinating in poor, rural areas.

It is a good idea potentially where there is no alternative at all but I worry about all these cans full of needles being tossed in the garbage and in landfills where they will open up as well as degrade and spill. Medical sharp waste here is destroyed in a controlled way preventing any sanitation worker or personin a dump from being injured

Dr Palter,

Good point. Here in the West we tend to see garbage as garbage - the final state of something. I think they just need to dig deeper holes in the ground.
