Treadmill-Desk Burns 100 Calories per Hour

Get movin!Researchers from the Mayo Clinic have news that doesn't really surprise us, but is pretty cool nonetheless. They constructed a standing work station with a treadmill, and put obese patients on it. Lo and behold! They burn calories...

They built what they called a "vertical workstation" -- a desk fitted over a standard treadmill. They persuaded 15 obese people to work at this treadmill-desk and measured how many calories they burned.

James Levine and Jennifer Miller measured how many calories their 15 volunteers burned using exhaled breath but did not determine if the volunteers lost weight.

On average, their overweight volunteers burned 100 calories more every hour while walking slowly -- at 1 mile per hour (1,6 km per hour) -- than while sitting in a chair.

"If obese individuals were to replace time spent sitting at the computer with walking computer time by 2 to 3 hours a day, and if other components of energy balance were constant, a weight loss of 20 to 30 kg a year could occur," the researchers wrote.

It's really strange that they took the time to measure calories burned, but not weight lost. Of course, that means they would've had to have an assortment of controls along with strict monitoring of the diet and activity levels of each subject--just to prove what would already be common sense.

Wish Mayo had also measured the test subjects calories burned while simply standing. As the pace was so incredibly slow--I can't help but wonder how many of the extra calories they burned were simply because they were standing, rather than sitting.

Having all three of those facts, sitting, versus standing, versus walking, would have made this fascinating information!

I can answer a lot of the questions here since I have been at a treadmill desk of my own now for 2 months. First, it works. I had back issues that have disappeared. I sleep like a baby at night and during the day I feel like I am on drugs....the good kind, endorphins. I walk 6 - 8 miles a day in my home office and sweating is not an issue unless I want to ramp it up a little while I am reading on the internet. I have lost 18 pounds already so I am a convert. The cost of the WalkStation is a concern for me but there is another product that offers more flexibility to use you own treadmill during the day as a desk and for exercise after work. It is called the TrekDesk. Pricing isnt set yet but it states on the TrekDesk website that it is going to be very affordable. They also are offering a pretty snazzy exercise ball chair that swings onto the treadmill (or off) for those moments when you have to sit. The website is www.trekdesk.com and has a lot of information on studies which focus on the long term benefits of walking. Hope this helps.
