BSD-2000 Hyperthermia System

BSD Medical Corporation of Salt Lake City, Utah has received the Frost & Sullivan 2005 Technology Innovation of the Year Award in the field of cancer therapy devices. The system receiving the award is the BSD-2000, "used to selectively destroy cancer through focused RF energy, and to boost the effectiveness of radiation and chemotherapy in combined treatments."

Conventional surface treatment methods used to perform similar therapies do not treat tumors that exist more than a few centimeters below the surface of the skin; consequently, deep tumors remain unaffected.

"The BSD-2000 overcomes such limitations by heating the tumor from inside out, employing a series of patented annular phased array radio frequency antennae that produce energy waves, which pass harmlessly through the body," says Frost & Sullivan research analyst A.N. Aditya. "BSD's technology focuses the energy waves to target the specific site of the tumor." By reducing the size of some tumors, hyperthermia can even make them easier to remove by surgery. When used in combination with existing therapies, it adds to the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation.
