In August, Microsulis Medical received FDA approval for its Acculis 2.45 GHz microwave ablation system. Unlike many of its competitors, the needle creates a nearly spherical ablation and can coagulate a 5.5 mm diameter volume in 6 minutes with a cooled antenna and a 6.8 mm volume in 8 minutes using an uncooled one. Here’s Stuart McIntyre, CEO of Microsulis, demonstrating the system using a freshly purchased piece of beef liver.
Out of curiosity we looked into the meaning of the company and product names and discovered that Sulis was a Celtic pagan goddess worshiped at the thermal spring of Bath in Somerset. Very appropriate indeed.
