Anthony Atala from the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine gave one of the most exciting and hopeful lectures at TEDMED 2009. His lab is working on engineering human tissue, including combining various components like muscle and blood vessels into complicated functional replacements. Fantastically, his team even transformed a consumer inkjet printer into a tissue printing device foreshadowing a medical future straight out of science fiction.
